Renovating a former barn used for agriculture into a family home has its benefits in terms of natural light and space. With few visual attractions externally on the original structure, it was these redeeming features inside that designers Kingswood Design were keen to retain.

With the property owners being designers themselves, the challenge was on to convert the barn into a modern family space, a far cry from its original state but with a nod to the past. With industrial styling chosen as the overall theme, in keeping with the building’s heritage, Inalco MDi worktops now form an important part of the space, practically and visually.

Inalco MDi Storm Negro surfaces from CRL Stone combine with materials including structural steel, brass, polished concrete and dark wood, along with the building’s original exposed beams, to create a space that is atmospheric and impactful. With the large open-plan space comfortably able to accommodate dark colours, slab style matt black furniture was chosen, offset by a wall of brass tiles, while marble-inspired Storm Negro worktops, complete with their fine white veining, give the room a luxury edge.

Thanks to the high durability of the surface, Storm Negro is a highly suitable choice for hardworking areas of the home such as the kitchen. Heat, stain and scratch resistant, minimal maintenance and cleaning is required to keep the surface in top condition. As Inalco MDi is UV stable the surface will not fade even when positioned in direct sunlight, making it ideal for spaces that enjoy plenty of natural light, such as the barn conversion.

With a shift towards surfaces with thinner profiles evident in industrial inspired kitchen design, Inalco MDi surfaces are just 12mm thick and available in an extra-large slab format. This enables them to be used to create surfaces with practically no joints, ensuring continuity and visual appeal, as is very much in evidence in this stunning, contemporary family home.

The perfect partner to industrial-inspired materials, which commonly range from metal to timber, Storm Negro is dark and sophisticated, with all the beauty of marble, including a subtle, white veining running throughout the surface that makes it the centre of attention.

As well as turning the central island unit into an instant and eye-catching focal point thanks to the luxurious marble-inspired look of the material, Storm Negro is the surface of choice throughout the open-plan kitchen. It helps to connect the various areas of what is a very modern and multi-functional space that has been designed to be enjoyed by all family members, day and night.

The surface has even been chosen for less obvious areas of the kitchen’s design, including a neat hideaway breakfast bar and drinks station that is concealed within the furniture. When on show there is an enormous sense of uniformity of design, as a result of the sheer versatility of the material and the designer’s clever thinking.
