As the kitchen becomes the hub of the home like never before and the design of the space shifts to open-plan to accommodate modern, multi-functional living and the fixtures and fittings, including worksurfaces need to work harder than ever.
When Andrew Southgate, Director of Debenvale, a bespoke handcrafted furniture maker, was tasked with creating a new open-plan kitchen/diner for his client, topping the cabinetry with CRL Quartz White Carrara was a natural choice.
The family of four were looking to create a space that would sit at the heart of their four-bedroom semi-detached home; a space perfect for hosting family events for their large extended family and for relaxing in the evening. “The family were looking for a traditionally made solid kitchen with a modern twist to the design and with all the latest technology and appliances,” explains Andrew.
What was a separate kitchen with small utility and dining room with a conservatory on the back of the diner was transformed into a large, open-plan space by removing the adjoining wall for kitchen and dining room and conservatory and adding a large extension. Complete with bi-fold corner doors and porcelain tiled flooring that flows seamlessly up to the patio, the new room is the perfect inside outside kitchen that can be enjoyed all year through.
With a generous amount of space to work with, and creating a sociable environment being key to the brief Debenvale created an island unit to meet their client’s brief, complete with plenty of surface space for preparing and cooking with seating. Topped with CRL Quartz White Carrara, a large amount of the worktop on the island is intended for cooking, as the material is durable, hygienic, simple to clean and can withstand wear and tear. The island itself is designed to naturally progress; starting at the sinks, bin and chopping board for prepping and then moving around to the cooking zone with hob, three ovens and integrated fridge/freezer and then to serve at the end of the island near the seating area which can be used as a dining table.
The homeowners were keen to tap into the trend for deep, dark tones in the kitchen, but to avoid this from being too overpowering a two-tone effect was chosen. With blue on the island and a lighter French grey on the cabinetry. With the client also wanting to incorporate the natural warmth of wood with the durability of quartz into the finished design, both materials were used on the island, with CRL Quartz for main cooking and prep areas and oak for the curved seating area. The colours of the oak and White Carrara Quartz complement the deep blue perfectly.
For a cohesive look, CRL Stone Quartz also features on the splashback, with LED under lit display shelving above. Storage is key in this busy family space, with a larder unit complete with large pull-out oak drawers and shelving for food storage and a breakfast station, again with CRL Quartz within for an easy to wipe clean surface.
With a TV cleverly integrated into a purpose-built media unit with built-in sound system and drinks area complete with wine cellar and glass and spirit storage, the family are now ready to enjoy time together in their beautiful new kitchen.
