The kitchen is one of the most lived in areas of the home and as spring approaches it’s common to want to give it an update and refresh. If you’ve just moved into a property, the last thing on your mind is likely to be a complete revamp of the kitchen while you are still surrounded by boxes and faced with a mountain of unpacking and if you’ve lived in your home for years you may be looking for cost-effective ways of giving your kitchen a touch of TLC without having to rip out cabinets.
Fortunately, there are some quick (and inexpensive) ways of getting a new kitchen on a budget.
1. Replace the countertop
This may cost less than you think but can make a dramatic difference to the overall look and feel of your kitchen, as the worktop is always on show and really draws the eye. A new work surface can even give a new lease of life to the cabinets underneath. The trick here is to opt for a style that is on trend but that won’t date too quickly, such as a marble-effect which works well in a contemporary or classic setting and consider a ceramic or quartz surface as a cost-effective and low-maintenance alternative to real stone that will leave you a lot more out of pocket.
2. Add a backsplash
This is another effective way to draw the eye to what’s new in the kitchen and give the space a quick and easy facelift. A backsplash doesn’t cover a huge area of the kitchen so needn’t cost a lot to update, regardless of the look you opt for. While tiling is a popular option for back splashes, a ceramic surface is an on-trend alternative that offers a seamless finish, particularly when paired with a countertop made from the same material. With a vast array of colours to choose from, this offers an opportunity to go for a stand-out design while also being highly practical.
3. Get painting
New furniture can be pricey but updating them with a fresh lick of paint can breathe new life into them on a budget. Pick a colour that sits in harmony or in contrast to your worktops for maximum effect. Alternatively, consider painting an accent wall. This is a job that can be done in a day but can work well, with darker colours best in larger spaces and bold, bright colours useful for making more compact kitchens look and feel much bigger.
4. Think about the dressings
New lighting can dramatically alter the look and feel of the kitchen and is a really simple update. A pendant light over an island unit, for example, will give the space an instant facelift. Likewise, a new window treatment and accessories such as towels and small appliances in a bright, bold colour that sits in contrast to your countertops, furniture and walls will give your kitchen the spring clean you are looking for.
