The term ‘porcelain’ often conjures up thoughts of tiles, teacups and fragile collectables, while ceramic is an arguably better-known term in the kitchen and bathroom industry, most often referring to sanitary ware, countertops and surfaces.
Ceramic is an extremely durable, water, stain, and wear resistant material that is easy to care for, available in an array of colours, patterns and sizes. However, ceramic is sometimes referred to as porcelain, so what is the difference between the materials or are they actually one and the same thing?
The truth is, of course, that both terms are correct when referring to Ceralsio surfaces. Porcelain is made by heating materials, generally including kaolin, in a kiln to temperatures between 1,200 and 1,400°C to produce the most hard-wearing type of ceramic. Ceralsio, for example, is developed by using the highest grade of ceramic material, with the temperature and duration of firing helping to determine its strength. The selection and fusion of the purest of materials, compacted at a force of 4,000 kg/m2 and sintered at temperatures of over 1200°C, make for a porcelain material that has the durability and strength to make it suitable for virtually any environment, including kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
In fact, Ceralsio surfaces are completely impermeable with a water absorption of just 0.2% and a class 5 stain resistance. Our sintered stone surfaces can also withstand a high weight without bending or become deformed, with the entire surface remaining flat due to its breaking strength superior to 1,300 N, surpassing international standards.
Because it is a non-porous surface, the build-up of bacteria or mould is prevented, and food can be placed in direct contact, while its low water absorption rate not only makes Ceralsio ideal for wet areas of the kitchen and bathroom, but also for exterior environments such as patio floors, where frost and ice is common. Its resistance to temperature variations and its UV stable properties mean that the surface will not crack or its colour will not fade over time, adding extra peace of mind when the surface is used outdoor.
Similarly, Ceralsio tiles are more than suitable for all areas of interior design, not least for the walls and floors in kitchen and bathrooms, as it is a non-toxic environmentally-friendly product that complies with European legislation and specific standards applicable to the tile sector.
All first-choice Ceralsio ceramic surfaces comply with and even surpass global and European standards regarding the definition, classification, characteristics and marking of ceramic tile materials. In addition to this, Ceralsio also has a Quality Control System, which it applies to the whole manufacturing and storage process. This high-precision ‘Full Digital’ printing system is a highly innovative process that creates unique, unrepeatable finishes, making every Ceralsio surface as individual as the setting it is chosen for.
It is the advanced manufacturing processes and the properties of the surface that make Ceralsio a versatile, eco-friendly and innovative form of ceramic that helps make life easier, comfortable and more convenient.
