If 2018 was the year of bold colours in interior design then 2019 is taking on a more muted feel, with shades that create a sense of calm high on the agenda. The same can be said for materials in the bathroom too, with natural-looking materials being particularly popular, whether used for the vanity top, flooring, wall cladding or even accessories.
Trends in bathroom design are taking their influence from the kitchen, where natural materials such as marble and timber dominate. This is one reason why surfaces that offer visual or tactile interest are gaining in popularity, together with the fact that the space is simply becoming more luxurious, with a spa-feel. Materials and finishes that add texture are a great way to give a sense of warmth and character to the bathroom. Combine the surfaces with a decoration that brings the outside in such as an array of tropical plants or nautical elements for the ultimate relaxing area.
For walls and floors, larger format tiles with less grout will be seen more. While this is good on a practical level as it makes the bathroom easier to clean, the grout-free look also makes the bathroom look and feel much bigger. This is particularly the case when the same material and colour are consistently used on the walls and floors, with a material such as Ceralsio ceramic making this simple to achieve as it is available in a wide range of natural colours in a large slab format and it features many practical advantages that are key in the bathroom. If desired, a pop of contrasting colour can be added with accessories such as towels, floor mat and candles that are easy to change from time to time to keep novelty in the bathroom.
There is also no reason why a small bathroom shouldn’t be big on style points and many of the trending materials and styles lend themselves to compact spaces. A marble-effect surface, for example, will instantly be a focal point of the small bathroom and is the ideal starting point for the remainder of the room’s design. A lighter coloured worktop and splashback used as an accent allows for the inclusion of darker furniture, creating a two-tone effect that is very effective over smaller spaces.
As well as making sure your chosen bathroom surfaces look the part, it is important to ensure it is durable enough to handle any activity. Consider how low maintenance the surface needs to be, by thinking about how often it will be used. As Ceralsio is a ceramic material, it is non-porous, preventing the build-up of bacteria or mould, while no extra care or special products are needed to clean it. A mild cleaning product is all that is required to keep the surface looking as good as new. It also never needs to be sealed to keep its original properties, making it the ideal surface for the bathroom.
Regardless of which surface you choose for your bathroom vanity top, floor and walls, always use an experienced designer and a professional fitter to ensure that it is the most suitable surface for your needs and that it is installed properly.
