The bathroom was already fast becoming an extension of our living spaces and a spa-like retreat long before the events of 2020 came along, but now more than ever this is a room viewed as a place of relaxation and sanctuary by homeowners. At a time when visits to spas and five-star hotels are difficult to come by, the latest trends in bathroom design enable us to emulate similar levels of luxury and comfort in our homes.
Here’s what to look out for as we head into the New Year:
Colour and pattern
Perhaps because we’ve all been spending more time at home, one of the biggest trends to make its way into the bathroom in 2021 will be the bold use of colour and pattern. As personal spaces, bathrooms are the perfect spot for injecting some personality into the home, and bold, bright pops of colour can work in any size space when carefully thought out. Whether it’s a painted feature wall, lavish wallpaper or simply some well styled accessories to add brightness, the time to throw caution to the wind in the bathroom is now.
New metallics
There’s been something of a break away from standard chrome on bathroom brassware of late, a trend that is set to hold fast in 2021 too. Finishes such as gold, nickel and antique bronze make something of a grand statement in the bathroom and make the perfect partner for a stone-inspired ceramic or quartz countertop or tiles.
Calm sanctuary
Wellness, mindfulness and self-care are likely to be paramount in 2021 and there’s no better place to put that into practice than in the bathroom. Creating a sense of calm begins with a careful choice of materials, finishes and colour, Muted tones, nature-inspired materials and an abundance of houseplants will all be seen in the bathroom of 2021, helping to achieve a soothing environment in which to unwind and escape the cares of the world, for just a little while.
Marble inspiration
Perhaps due to the shift towards more pattern in the bathroom, the popularity of marble-inspired surfaces is due to grow and grow in 2021. Here though, think rich, bold patterning, like that seen on Ceralsio Statuario, which is perfect for making a statement of the countertop, when used as a splashback or even for whole walls in an open-plan wet room.
Black is back
While colour is definitely on the wish list for 2021, black can be just as powerful at creating a sense of drama and sophistication in the bathroom. This is a shade that is being seen more and more on sanitary ware, brassware and other fittings and is definitely a trend to watch as it is so versatile that it works whether your bathroom is classic or contemporary in style. Ceralsio Marquina, for example can be contrasted with white for a stylish monochrome effect that will make quite the impression.
