New year new bathroom? If you are planning a re-fit in 2018 take a look at what’s on-trend in the bathroom style stakes.
Comfort & relaxation – In 2018 the shift towards bathrooms that are as big on escapism and comfort as they are on practicality and function will continue apace. Practical elements such as clever hidden storage will ensure the bathroom can be used to escape and relax. With a spa-like feel increasingly being sought, the trend towards bringing the outdoors in will continue, with earthy materials and natural light being seen.
Statement basins – The washbasin will be a focal point of the bathroom in 2018, with furniture units topped with ceramic or quartz surging in popularity. The perfect complement to the emerging trend for stone washbasins, a ceramic or quartz countertop is a practical choice that can also be highly aesthetic due to the versatile nature of the material.
Shower or bath? – While freestanding baths in materials such as composite stone will be popular in 2018, spa baths will be less popular. Instead it is the shower that will be a feature of the bathroom, with multi-jets, rain heads and the latest technology creating that spa-like experience. Following this, shower areas are becoming more open-plan with less call for shower screens and more emphasis on tiling the walls to create a splash-proof area.
On the tiles – Larger tiles with less grout will be seen more and more. While this is good on a practical level as it makes the bathroom easier to clean, the grout-free look also makes the bathroom look and feel much bigger. This is particularly the case when the tiling is consistent on the walls and floors, with a material such as porcelain making this simple to achieve, with tiles available in a range of thicknesses to suit various surface types. Such tiles also tap into the move away from all-white bathrooms which we can expect to see in 2018, towards spaces with colour, pattern and texture.
Brassware finishes – While chrome will continue to take the lion’s share of the market, finishes such as brushed nickel and even matt black will increasingly be seen in the bathroom of 2018. Such finishes work well with the trend for statement washbasins and with that towards ceramic or quartz surfaces.
Colour’s back – If 2017 was the year of the monochrome bathroom, with lots of black and all-white bathrooms, then 2018 is the year for colour. White is not out completely though, as it will be paired with strong, bold colours such as navy on the Pantone Colour of the Year Ultra Violet, to make the bathroom feel and look fresh and modern. Ceramic and quartz surfaces will again work well with the trend, with a crisp white countertop or splashback, or marble-effect tiling making a striking backdrop for a splash of colour elsewhere.
